Senate Approves Plan to Help Fund Stadiums, Public Projects
Harrisburg – The State Senate today approved a plan that would pave
the way for the construction of new sports stadiums and other facilities
in Pennsylvania, Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) said today.
White voted against the Ridge Administration plan, which calls for raising
about $300 million in bonds to fund one-third of the cost of new sports
stadiums in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The cities and their sports teams
would fund the other two-thirds.
Said White: "I support economic development in Allegheny County and
Western Pennsylvania, but I'm not convinced that the proposal put forth
to justify this cap increase is good public policy or will deliver real
growth. My constituents aren't either. They have spoken loud and clear.
I listened and voted no."
The plan would increase the debt ceiling in the state Redevelopment
Assistance Fund to create the new funds, she said. |
