White: Clock Ticking to Apply for Underground Storage Tank
Clean-up Funds
Harrisburg -- With the application deadline looming, Sen. Mary Jo White
(R-21) today urged owners of underground storage tanks to take advantage
of two state programs that help them clean and plug unused tanks.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a December 22 deadline
for upgrading or removing tanks, and has announced there will be no extension.
"Tapping into the assistance programs doesn’t just make good financial
sense, it’s important for the environment," she said.
White said that under a program run by the state Department of Community
and Economic Development and the state Insurance Department, low-interest
loans of up to $500,000 are available to upgrade tanks to meet federal
requirements.
Under a state Department of Environmental Protection program, she said,
grants of up to $6,000 per tank are available. Applications will be awarded
on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Applications and information can be obtained by calling DCED at 1-800-379-7488
or DEP at 1-800-42TANKS (1-800-428-2657).
