White to Chair Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee

Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) begins the 1999-2000 legislative session with a new committee assignment.

The first-term lawmaker will chair the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. It was among a number of committee assignments recently announced by Senate President Pro Tempore Robert C. Jubelirer.

White said her appointment presents an exciting opportunity to tackle the many challenging issues that come before the committee.

"The Governor has outlined a number of environmental initiatives to be included in his proposed budget aimed at remedying old environmental problems and at avoiding new ones. This committee will face the challenge of protecting scarce and valuable natural resources while allowing for economic development," she said.

White also serves on the influential Senate Appropriations Committee, which will begin hearings on the proposed 1999-2000 state budget next month.

She is also a member of the Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, Public Health and Welfare, and Judiciary committees. Her committee chairmanship also gains her a seat on the Environmental Quality Board.

Senate committees perform a vital task, the senator noted, by reviewing pending legislation before it reaches the Senate floor.

"Much of the critical legislative work is done in Committee and I am very fortunate to have assignments that will enable me to deal with key issues important to the 21st District. These include healthcare, telecommunications and quality of life," she said.
