Senate Passes White Measure to Aid Volunteer Firefighters, Nonprofits
Harrisburg – Volunteer firefighters and other organizations that rely on fundraising for support would receive an important boost under legislation sponsored by Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) and approved by the state Senate on Tuesday.
Senate Bill 648 would enable volunteer fire departments and other eligible organizations to raise more funds by increasing the cash value of prizes that can be raffled at fundraising events.
The senator said the current limit on prizes is shortchanging the men and women who volunteer to protect Pennsylvania’s communities.
"They should be able to spend more time on training and less time on fundraising. Remember, they are volunteers, " said White.
White said she took action after being contacted by fire departments in her district asking for relief from the present restrictions.
Present law limits the total cash value to no more than $25,000 per raffle with a special permit. Many eligible organizations can get no more than two such permits per year. Volunteer fire, ambulance and rescue organizations can receive three special permits each year.
The senator’s bill would allow for an annual $100,000 total cash value of all prizes to be raffled.
"This will enable charitable organizations to have one large fundraiser and stay within the law," White said.
The legislation was sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. CONTACT: Leigh Ramsey (717) 787-9684
