White Announces $328,000 in Growing Greener Environmental Protection Grants

Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) today announced the awarding of $328,000 in state environmental protection grants for the region, targeting abandoned oil and gas wells, an impaired creek and an illegal dump.

The grants were awarded through the Environmental Stewardship and Watershed Protection program – or "Growing Greener" – which was created last year by legislation sponsored by White.

The senator announced the following grants:

  • $176,800 awarded to the Oil Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited to locate and assess abandoned oil and gas wells   throughout the Sandy Creek Watershed. The project will prioritize the wells based on environmental significance with at least 12 wells to be plugged.
  • $149,570 awarded to the Armstrong, Jefferson, Clarion and Clearfield County Conservation Districts to assess 573 square miles of the Redbank Creek watershed and to implement agricultural best management practices within the watershed. An emphasis will be placed on the impaired 10.8 square miles of Hulings Run. A variety of conservation measures will be provided, including stream crossing, stream fencing, riparian buffers and water control structures.
  • $1,650 awarded to Licking Township in Clarion County to clean up an illegal dump site on Lohr Road. The project will include removing approximately 50 tons of household refuse and construction debris from the site, which drains into the Beaver Creek stocked trout stream and the Clarion River.

Growing Greener is matching much needed financial resources with volunteers and organizations that have taken the initiative to clean up our environment," said White. "These projects represent an investment in protecting and preserving our natural resources."

The grants were awarded by the state Department of Environmental Protection, which administers the Environmental Stewardship and Watershed Protection Grant Program.
