White Announces Recycling Grants for Shenango, Wilmington Townships
Harrisburg
– State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) today announced the awarding of two state
grants to help Shenango and Wilmington townships in Lawrence County maintain
their recycling programs.
White said
Shenango Township has been awarded a $4,681 Recycling Performance Grant and
Wilmington Township will receive a $1,164 Recycling Performance Grant.
The senator said each grant amount
was based on the total tons recycled, the type of material recycled and each
township’s overall recycling rate during the 1999 fiscal year.
“Recycling is a responsible,
environmentally-friendly way to conserve natural resources and divert waste
from landfills,” said White, who chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and
Energy Committee. “With the efforts of residents
and officials of Shenango and Wilmington townships, we have an excellent opportunity
to reach the statewide goal of recycling 35 percent of all municipal waste by
2003.”
The Recycling Performance Grant
Program is administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection,
which awards a variety of grant funds to help municipalities establish and
maintain recycling programs.
