White Announces
"Growing Greener" Grants for Butler County
Harrisburg
– State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) today announced the awarding of $83,124 in
state environmental protection grants for Butler County. The funds will assist local organizations to
expand their environmental education, assessment and outreach efforts
throughout the county.
The
grants were awarded through the Environmental Stewardship and Watershed
Protection program – or "Growing Greener" – which was signed into law
as Act 68 of 1999. Senator White was
the prime sponsor of the Growing Greener legislation.
The
senator announced the following grants:
- $44,479 awarded to the Moraine Preservation Fund
to maintain and expand the Fund's environmental education programming at
Moraine State Park.
- $25,340 awarded to Glade Run Lutheran Services,
located in Zelienople. The funds will
be used to educate special needs students at St. Stephen's school in Jackson
Township on non-point source pollution and its impact on watersheds.
- $8,305 awarded to the Connoquenessing Watershed
Alliance, Inc. These funds will be used
to purchase equipment and supplies necessary for the Alliance to expand its
volunteer water quality monitoring program and assume testing at 10 sites. The grant will also enable the Alliance to
consolidate its information management operations and facilitate the
development of a Geographic Information System database, and maintain
publication of its quarterly newsletter to volunteers and area residents.
- $5,000 awarded to the Butler County Conservation
District to assist in the formation of the Bear Creek Watershed Association.
"Education
and awareness are both critical elements of any successful stewardship
project," said White. "Additionally, the creation of new
watershed associations helps foster a sense of ownership in
waterways by local residents who are interested in restoring
and protecting our watersheds."
