White: Expanded Computer Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 5-12
Harrisburg – The next round of
“computer sales tax holidays” will take place the week of August 5 through 12,
state Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) said today.
White said that from August 5
through 12, computers and accessories purchased in Pennsylvania will not be
subject to state sales tax.
“Computer sales tax holidays have proven pretty
popular in past years, and I expect many people will take advantage of the
latest round,” said White. “This year’s
program has been expanded to include computer-related items, not just computer
systems.”
Previously, consumers had to buy a
complete system in order to get the tax break.
The expanded “Tax-Free PC Plus” program lets people buy computer
accessories like printers, monitors and scanners separately without being
charged state sales tax and that can result in significant savings.
White said the sales tax holiday
will also include devices that enhance Internet access, such as WebTV. All systems bought for non-business use
during the “holiday” weeks will be free of all sales taxes.
One requirement is that customers
must pay for the computer during the weeklong periods in order to receive the
tax break, even if the system is delivered later. Rentals, leasing or repairs
of computer systems are not eligible for the tax break, nor are systems bought
for business purposes.
White
said a second sales tax holiday is set for February 16-23, 2002.
“If you weren’t planning to
purchase computer equipment this summer, you may want to keep the next Tax-Free
PC Plus week in mind,” she said. “You can look around and shop in the meantime
to maximize your savings.”
