White: Grants for child-care providers available
Awards to organizations range from $50,000 to $1
million
Harrisburg --Child-care
providers and community organizations can apply for state assistance to improve
access to child-care in underserved areas under a new grant program, according
to Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21).
Under the new $10 million Child-Care Challenge Grants Program,
nonprofit child-care providers, and nonprofit organizations applying on behalf
of a for-profit child-care organization, are eligible to receive assistance,
according to White. “For those who need
it, professional child-care can make all the difference in the world,” said
White.
“It can
be the difference between working and being on welfare. These grants can bring
this child-care help to parents who
live in communities where such assistance is hard to come by.” White said the
Department of Community and
Economic Development and the Department of Public Welfare are cooperatively
running the
new grant
program. Applicants can receive a maximum of $1 million per fiscal year, not to
exceed 75 percent of the
eligible project cost. The minimum
grant is $50,000.
- Grant recipients may use the funds for the following purposes:
- Staff development and training;
- Staff recruitment, including initial payment of salaries and other
recruitment costs;
- Educational materials and supplies;
- Interior building renovations;
- Building lease; and
- Engineering, architectural, legal and other costs.
