White: Apply For
Free Eye Exams, Glasses Through VISION USA
Deadline to apply
for low-income program is Jan. 23, 2002
Harrisburg -- Low-income
working families can apply for free eye examinations and vision care through a
special program, state Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) announced today.
“Proper vision care is vital for healthy living, but
it can be expensive,” said White.
“Low-income working families who don’t have insurance that covers eye
exams should consider taking advantage of this VISION USA initiative.”
VISION USA is sponsored by the Pennsylvania
Optometric Association and the Pennsylvania Vision Conservation Institute.
The examinations will be scheduled in March 2002 to
coincide with “Save Your Vision Month.” Exams are limited in some areas.
Qualified applicants will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis to a
volunteer optometrist from their community who will perform an exam and provide
basic eyewear, if needed, at no cost.
Applicants must meet four conditions to qualify for
free eye care:
- They must have a job or
live in a household where at least one person is working part-time or
full-time.
- They must not have
insurance that covers eye examinations.
- The family income must
be below an established level for household size.
- They must not have had
an eye exam during the past two years.
Those interested in the program can apply in three
ways:
- Via the Internet at
http://www.aoanet.org/x5607.xml.
- Mail-in applications
are available at local Salvation Army Offices or by writing VISION USA at
243 N. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63141. These applications must be
postmarked by January 23, 2002.
- Or, by calling
toll-free (800) 766-4466 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., from
January 2-31, 2002.
