White: Sign Up by Sept. 15 to Get On the First Telemarketer “Do Not Call”
List
Harrisburg
– Under a new state law, consumers have until Sept. 15 to sign up for the first
“Do Not Call” list that prevents telemarketers from calling, state Sen. Mary Jo
White (R-21) said today.
The list
will be updated on a quarterly basis, said White. Consumers who sign up by the
deadline should begin receiving fewer telemarketing calls in November. Those
signing up after Sept. 15 will be on a list that goes into effect the following
quarter.
Act 24 of 2002 provided for the
creation of a statewide “Do Not Call” registry, allowing consumers to remove
their names and telephone numbers from telemarketing lists for a five-year
period.
Telemarketers who fail to comply or
who continue to solicit residents on the do-not-call list will be subject to
civil penalties of $1,000 per violation, and $3,000 for each violation
involving a person age 60 or older.
“No law can eliminate all of life’s
annoyances, but this measure will allow Pennsylvanians to regain a little peace
and privacy in their homes,” said White. “Millions of people have taken
advantage of this opportunity in other states, and now Pennsylvanians can, too.
Consumers who want to get on the ‘Do Not Call’ list as quickly as possible
should make sure to sign up by September 15th.”
