Sen. White, Sen. Scarnati: Hatch Run Conservation District Conveyance Passes Senate

Harrisburg – Legislation that would convey the Hatch Run Conservation Demonstration property in Glade Township to the Warren County Conservation District was approved by the state Senate today and sent to the House for concurrence, according to Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) and Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-25).

The 351-acre former Warren State Hospital Property is used for conservation demonstration projects covering agriculture, forestry, water resources and wildlife. Enactment of House Bill 745 will ensure that the land is retained for that use by directing the state Department of General Services to convey the property to the Warren County Conservation District.

"Hatch Run is a great tool for public education," said White, who chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. "In recent years it has been used to educate the public about conservation and the proper management of natural resources through workshops, field days and demonstrations."

"Environmental issues come up quite often in public policy debate, and the more local citizens have a hands-on understanding, the better positioned they are to make sure that policymakers craft sensible, responsible environmental regulations," she said.

Recent years have brought landscape improvement, nature trail completion, the purchase of farm equipment and more to the property.

"The Warren County Conservation District has big plans for this property, including the construction of an environmental education center, a pavilion and development of an outdoor classroom curriculum," said Scarnati. "This property provides the kind of conservation education that simply cannot be duplicated in a classroom."

"Also, passage of this measure puts these local lands under local control, where they belong. I urge the House to act on this legislation as quickly as possible so the Warren County Conservation District can move ahead with its important projects."
