Legislation Would Allow City
Retirees to Collect Pension, Serve Public
Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White
(R-Venango) is introducing legislation that would allow retired city
employees to continue receiving pension benefits while serving in
elected office.
The legislation was drafted after the
state Auditor General's Office determined that, under current law, a
mayor within Senator White's district could not continue to receive
pension benefits and serve as mayor. The salary for the post was only
$2,400 per year. The mayor was forced to resign to continue receiving
his pension.
"My legislation simply gives elected
officials the option of declining a salary, serving in office and
continuing their pension benefits," said White. "Retired local
government employees have a wealth of knowledge and experience, and we
should remove barriers that discourage their public service."
This legislation would apply to
retirees of Third Class Cities. Franklin, Oil City, Butler, Corry and
Warren are all Third Class Cities within Senator White's senatorial
district.
