White Announces $768,793 in Technology Assistance for Area Schools

Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) today announced that local school districts will receive a total of $768,793 in technology assistance grants for 2004-05 through the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

White said the Enhancing Education Through Technology competitive grants will be used to improve student achievement, help teachers integrate technology into curricula, and support a rigorous evaluation of projects undertaken with program funds.

"The federal government is providing an unprecedented amount of funding to help school districts improve academic achievement, and it is important that schools in the 21st Senatorial District receive their fair share," said White.  "Rural areas in general have lagged behind in being wired for information technology, and that affects schools. This federal assistance is a welcome boost for local school districts."

The following school districts in the 21st Senatorial District are being awarded grants, which fund the first year of two-year projects:

  • Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District-$29,994
  • Butler Area School District-$187,480
  • Corry Area School District-$63,500
  • Franklin Area School District-$60,580
  • North Clarion County School District-$30,000
  • Oil City Area School District-$62,220
  • Penncrest School District-$98,300
  • Redbank Valley School District-$32,240
  • Slippery Rock Area School District-$55,219
  • Warren County School District-$149,260

White said grant eligibility was based on school districts with both the highest percentages of children from families with incomes below the poverty line and the greatest need for assistance in acquiring and integrating technology into the classroom. Applications were judge competitively via a peer review process.

A total of 67 school districts and charter schools in 39 Pennsylvania counties will receive $10.5 million in Enhancing Education Through Technology funds.
