White Bill Would
Designate Butler's Main Street Bridge as "Gen.
Richard Butler Bridge"
Approved by
Senate, sent to House of Representatives
Harrisburg – The state Senate today approved
legislation sponsored by Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21)
that would designate the Main Street Bridge in
Butler as the "General Richard Butler Bridge," after
the Revolutionary War hero.
"General Richard Butler played a significant role
in the birth of our nation and development of our
region," said White. "It is fitting that we bestow
this recognition of General Butler's accomplishments
in the city and county that bears his name."
General Butler served with George Washington at
Valley Forge and was involved in the battles of
Saratoga, Yorktown and Monmouth. At the end of the
war he served as a commissioner negotiating treaties
with American Indian tribes. General Butler was
killed in 1791 during the Battle of Miami (Ohio).
He also served as a judge of the Court of Common
Pleas of Allegheny County and was instrumental in
establishing Allegheny County as a separate
political entity from Westmoreland County. When
Allegheny County was divided in 1800, an area north
of Pittsburgh was named Butler County in honor of
the general.
The Main Street Bridge carries state Route 8 over
Connoquenessing Creek, the B&P Railroad, the B&LE
Railroad and Quarry Street.
Senate Bill 706 will next be considered by the
House of Representatives.
