Senate Approves
White Legislation to Allow City Retirees to Collect
Pension, Serve Public
Harrisburg – The state Senate has approved
legislation sponsored by Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21)
that would allow retired city employees to continue
receiving pension benefits while serving in elected
office.
Senate Bill 457 was drafted after the state
Auditor General's Office determined that, under
current law, a mayor in Senator White's district
could not continue to receive pension benefits and
serve as mayor. The salary for the post was only
$2,400 per year. The mayor was forced to resign to
continue receiving his pension.
"Retired local government employees have a wealth
of knowledge and experience, and this will clear up
a conflict that unnecessarily discourages their
public service," said White. "This bill simply gives
elected officials the option of declining a salary,
serving in office and continuing their pension
benefits."
This legislation would apply to retirees of Third
Class Cities which includes Franklin, Oil City,
Butler, Corry and Warren.
The bill was sent to the House of Representatives
for consideration.
