White Announces Grants to Expand Internet
Connections in Schools
Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White
(R-21) today announced the approval of three state grants to
expand telecommunications and high-speed Internet
connections at area schools.
White said the E-Fund grants were
created by the General Assembly in 2004 to provide schools
with grants to purchase technology services, hardware,
technical assistance and distance-learning opportunities.
The senator announced the following
grants:
-
Warren County School District --
$200,000 to help the district pay for technology upgrades
that will allow it to deliver additional educational
content to students.
-
Midwestern Intermediate Unit 4
(Butler County) -- $20,000 to help develop an application
for next year's round of technology grants.
-
Riverview Intermediate Unit 6
(Butler, Clarion, Forest, Venango and Warren counties) --
$35,000 to help develop an application for next year's
round of technology grants.
White said technology grant recipients
were required to provide connectivity to large geographic
areas with low speed or no connectivity, form consortiums to
leverage costs and services or provide distance learning
resources and well planned professional development.
"It's extremely important that rural
areas such as ours do not lose out on the educational
opportunities offered by reliable, fast Internet
connections," said White.
