Sen. White Announces the Helen Gerlach Memorial Scholarship
Fund at Clarion University
Political
science scholarship named after well-known resident and Senate aide.
Harrisburg – State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) today announced the creation of
a Clarion University scholarship fund to honor well-known Clarion resident and
Senate aide Helen Gerlach, who passed away May 14.
The Helen Gerlach Memorial Scholarship Fund at Clarion University of
Pennsylvania will support students studying political science, the senator
said.
"Helen loved politics and policy. She delighted in the company of young
people and was a mentor and role model to many of them. This scholarship is a
fitting way to remember her many contributions to the community and the
Commonwealth."
Mrs. Gerlach moved to Clarion in the 1990s and worked as the district office
administrator for then-state Sen. Tim Shaffer, taking the same position with
Senator White in1998. She was a member of the Clarion Rotary Club, and served on
the boards of the United Way and Community Action. She was also a member of
First Presbyterian Church in Clarion.
Mrs. Gerlach is survived by two daughters and one son, U.S. Congressman Jim
Gerlach of Chester County, who also served with Senator White in the
Pennsylvania General Assembly.
