Senator White Comments on Rejection of I-80 Tolling Plan

Clarion – State Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) issued the following statement on the Federal Highway Administration’s rejection of Pennsylvania’s plan to toll Interstate 80:

"The tolling of Interstate 80 would have a devastating effect on the quality of life for those who live and work along the corridor, and I am pleased that the Federal Highway Administration listened to our concerns and rejected this plan. Economic development along I-80 has occurred under the assumption that it would remain a toll-free road. In addition to citizens who live along I-80, businesses, farmers, small power plants, and even hospitals said the tolls would add millions to their operating costs – which would mean fewer jobs and increased consumer costs."

"Now we must face the challenge of funding transportation projects in Pennsylvania without resorting to new toll roads. The General Assembly and Rendell Administration must work with federal officials to secure funding for roads, bridges and other projects that will ensure safety and economic vitality."
