Turnpike Seeking Public Input on All-Electronic Tolling
Commission conducting online survey on ending cash payments
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is conducting an online survey to gather
public opinion on the possibility of ending cash payments for tolling fees,
state Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21) said today.
The commission is conducting a study to learn how the conversion to a
cashless, All-Electronic Tolling (AET) system – such as E-ZPass -- would impact
customers and operations.
As part of its study, the commission is asking motorists to complete an
online survey at
www.paturnpike.com/aet. Respondents are asked a few easy questions and have
the opportunity to provide additional comments and concerns.
The survey will be available until August 22.
"It's not every day that a government agency solicits the direct input from
the public regarding a significant proposal," said White. "The Turnpike is a
major highway used by many motorists. This is an opportunity for them to let
their opinions be heard."
The commission is studying the existing toll-collection system, analyzing
existing AET systems throughout the U.S., and comparing the costs and benefits
of various electronic tolling options.
It will release a report this fall with recommendations. The report will
include a cost estimate and the schedule required to design, construct and
operate an AET system if it is determined to be feasible.
